Successful entrants make their pitch to the dragons
Finalists selected for the Barclays Money Skills Junior Charity Challenge had mixed success.
Eighteen successful entrants from across Kent took part in the 'dragon's den-style' event hoping to make a winning pitch for cash for good causes at the event on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at the Gulbenkian Theatre in Canterbury.
They were given the chance to make a three minute presentation on stage to a panel of “dragons” from the world of business and the charitable sector.
The children and young adults were all bidding for a share of £10,000 in the competition, which was run by the KM Charity Team.
2010 Finalists were:
Temple Ewell Primary School, Dover, applied for £1,000 for the PTA to fund an art project to brighten up the outside of three mobile classrooms. Awarded £500. Session 1.
St Benedict’s Primary School, Dartford, applied for £1,000 for Arrow Riding Centre for the Disabled to fence a field to create two separate grazing areas for mares and geldings. Awarded £1,000. Session 1.
Chantry Primary School, Gravesend, applied for £1,000 for the Friends of Chantry school to buy sound equipment for stage performances and discos. Awarded £415. Session 1.
Maidstone Rugby Club mini section, applied for £1,000 for the club to develop waste ground to enhance training facilities for the youth section. Awarded £415. Session 1.
Marden Primary School, Maidstone, applied for £1,000 for the school to buy class laptops to enable all children to access computers during all lessons. Awarded £700 to purchase two laptops. Session 1.

Temple Mill Primary School, Strood, applied for £300 to buy uniforms for disabled children attending Cerebral Palsy Care’s Smiley Steps Centre. Awarded £300. Session 1.
Valley Park Community School, Maidstone, applied for £1,000 for a laptop and printer for a volunteer co-ordinator at Macmillan Cancer. Did not attend event. Session 2.
The Princess Royal Medway Young Carers Project, applied for £1,000 to buy games equipment for children at the Medway Carers Centre. Awarded £1,000. Session 2.
East Kent Strokes, Ashford, applied for £500 to buy laptop computers to improve the quality of life for people who have suffered from a stroke. Awarded £500. Session 2.
Borden Grammar School, Sittingbourne, applied for £1,000 for The Heart of Kent Hospice in Maidstone to buy books for teenagers who need counselling because their parent has a terminal illness. Awarded £450. Session 2.
Kent Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre, applied for £1,000 for the charity to buy new chairs and tables for those using the centre. Awarded £880. Session 2.
Star Stage School, Cliftonville, applied for £500 for the school to provide costumes for the children’s summer show at Margate Winter Gardens. Awarded £500. Session 2.
Valley Vipers Wheelchair Basketball Team, Folkestone, applied for £1,000 for the group to buy a trailer to store and transport new sports wheelchairs. Awarded £900. Session 3.
Headway Head Injury Support Sustain Centre, Canterbury applied for £1,000 towards 21st anniversary party for the charity’s clients and carers.
Awarded £600. Session 3.
1st Birchington Brownies, applied for £1,000 to replace worn out sports and cooking equipment. Awarded £500. Session 3.
East Kent Mavericks American Football Club, Canterbury, applied for £1,000 to buy protective equipment, training aids and help with the costs of hosting games. Did not attend event. Session 3.
Sheppey Sea Cadets, Sheerness, applied for £1,000 for equipment and refurbishment of the jetty for the boats. Awarded £1,000. Session 3.
Hersden Youth Club, Hersden, applied for £1,000 for lighting at the BMX track to enable it to be used all year round. Awarded £330. Session 3.
Three sessions were held on the night with session 1 from 5pm to 6pm, session 2 from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and session 3 from 8pm to 9pm.
The event was sponsored by Barclays bank and the KM Group supported by the University of Kent and the Gulbenkian Theatre.
